Foot Care for runners

Runners spend a huge amount of time choosing their footwear, but often neglect what goes inside them! Your feet are subjected to enormous forces when you run (three times your body weight in fact) and if you don’t take proper care of them you are storing up potential problems. The old maxim states that, ‘prevention is better than cure’ and this is certainly true with regard to foot care. So to avoid the pain and difficulty of patching up badly damaged feet, follow these 5 tips to keep them in top condition.

Cut nails straight: Your toenails should be cut straight across. Avoid cutting them too short or trying to round them off as this can cause ingrown toenails. You might find it easier to cut nails after a bath as this softens them up.

Keep them clean and dry: Try to wash your feet daily with mild soap and warm water. Don’t soak the feet for too long and be sure to dry them thoroughly, particularly between the toes.

Wear shower shoes: If you use gym or swimming pool changing rooms, it’s a good idea to get a pair of flips flops or shower shoes. Veruccas and the fungus that causes athlete’s foot tend to spread where it is wet and people are walking barefoot.

Use a good foot cream: Applying a high quality foot cream to areas of dry or cracked skin will help keep your feet in a healthy state. Zuku’s Foot Conditioner has been specially developed for runners. It is intensely conditioning and very quickly absorbed with anti-microbial action built in.

Select the right footwear: Make sure your footwear fits correctly as most problems with the feet start with ill-fitting shoes. Wear clean socks with each activity and make sure your footwear is completely dry before every run. Running shoes will take at least 24 hours to dry so it’s worth having a second pair for this reason alone.
