I grew up in Croydon and went to Whitgift School where I discovered a love for many different sports. Football has always been my favourite, though. In the past two decades, I’ve played for many teams in the majority of leagues across London. I’m currently player-manager of a side in the London Commercial League. I founded Zuku with Louis because we felt that most big sports companies nowadays are more interested in following fashion, trend and celebrity than producing decent products for good-level athletes. They waste too much money on promoting a very small band of hyped sportsmen and don’t spend enough on the manufacture of the goods they actually sell. We wanted to do things differently. We vowed never to advertise, sponsor or pay for endorsements so that all our resources could be poured into the products themselves. When we produce a Zuku line, we do so with no expense spared. When you use a Zuku product for the first time, you’ll be surprised how different it feels to anything you’ve tried before. We’re really proud of that.
Louis
There are far too many generic, nondescript products on-sale now. It’s ridiculous that so much emphasis is placed on different colours of the same product by some companies - this is not innovation. I think discerning consumers appreciate good quality products and can tell the difference between real innovation and a gimmick. We create products that we believe in and that we feel our customers will benefit from and genuinely enjoy using.
The death of independent shops that sell more interesting and varied products is sad and this is one of the reasons why I love new technology. The internet enables more diverse and interesting businesses to survive and flourish, by allowing them to sell directly to their customers and cut out the middlemen.
I have quite dry skin so all Zuku skin creams are tested rigorously on me before anyone else.
Ruth
Working in Basel, Switzerland I organize the development of the Zuku products. Known for having an investigative nature (my colleagues have nicknamed me after a famous detective) I like solving problems and sourcing in new materials. I enjoy running, playing badminton and race every year in the Basel City Run.
Whatever level you compete at it's important to have the right gear to support you. That's one of the reasons I enjoy working at Zuku as we focus on producing quality products that will genuinely make a difference to your sport. One of Zuku's mantras could be quality over quantity and I think that's the future.
